Population health surveillance training for Central Asian countries

7 – 11 July 2025
Samarkand, Uzbekistan

WHO/Europe and the WHO Country Office in Uzbekistan will co-host a training on population health surveillance in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on 7–11 July. The event will bring together health information analysts, experts and policy-makers from Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) to build capacity for transforming raw health data into actionable insights. Participants will strengthen their skills in data collection, analysis, visualization and policy translation using real-world country data and hands-on exercises.

The population health surveillance training is part of WHO/Europe’s efforts to strengthen national health information systems and data governance as part of the ongoing partnership with the European Union.

Reliable health data is the foundation of effective public health policy. This initiative comes at the important time when countries are advancing major health reforms. Strengthening health information systems is key for evidence-based decision-making, efficient resource allocation and improved population health outcomes.

Over the course of the 5-day training, participants will learn more about population health surveillance systems and their relevance for public health policy; practice analysing cause-of-death data with various tools; discuss effective reporting and communication of health data for decision-making; and explore approaches to knowledge translation, including the use of evidence in policy-making and regional cooperation.
