Discussion paper: Global initiative to eliminate cataract-related blindness and vision impairment

Overview

This World Health Organization discussion paper outlines a global initiative to eliminate cataract-related blindness and vision impairment as a public health problem by 2045. To achieve this, the framework establishes a global target of 90% effective cataract surgery coverage and introduces the "SEE" strategy—focusing on Screening, Equitable access, and Effective surgery. It provides countries with phased implementation roadmaps, milestone benchmarks, and standardized surveillance and validation processes supported by WHO technical tools and simulation models.
