Representatives of Field Epidemiology Training Networks from ASEAN Plus Three countries gathered in Bangkok from 2–4 September 2026 to strengthen their capacity to rapidly assess health threats and translate evidence into timely public health action.
The workshop was supported through collaboration among Thailand’s Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health; the WHO Regional Office for South-East Asia (SEARO); the WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific (WPRO); and the WHO Country Office in Thailand. This cooperation promotes a common approach to public health intelligence and strengthens regional health security.
Participants applied WHO’s Risk Analysis Package for Member States, including the Quick and Immediate Risk Assessment (QIRA) algorithm and the Member State Rapid Risk Assessment (MS-RRA) tool. Through case studies, they practiced assessing acute public health events, interpreting findings and recommending proportionate response actions.
The workshop also explored how these tools could be integrated into national Rapid Response Team (RRT) operations and Field Epidemiology Training Programmes. Participants exchanged experiences and lessons to support standardized, transparent and evidence-informed decision-making across the region.
Building on previous RRT workshops held in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Indonesia and Viet Nam, this fourth workshop demonstrated the value of cooperation among ASEAN Plus Three countries and across WHO regions.
By strengthening the link between early detection, risk assessment and timely action, the initiative will help countries respond more effectively to emerging health threats and contribute to a more prepared, resilient and secure region.
